Huawei HarmonyOS2 Released

In early June, Huawei officially released its long-awaited Harmony OS2, and announced upgrade plans for a list of Huawei devices that can have a first taste of the OS. All models on the list will be able to upgrade to Harmony OS2 before June 2021. However, many Huawei device models will remain under the closed beta state, and the first batch of upgraded models are only updated to a public beta version.

On June 24, the official version of Harmony OS2 was launched. The first batch of the devices will have the privilege to be upgraded from the current public beta version to the official version of the Harmony OS2.

The list of devices which will be able to upgrade to the official Harmony OS2 is identical to the list announced earlier on this month:

  • Huawei Mate40 series: 40E, 40, 40 Pro, 40 Pro+, 40 RS Porsche
  • Huawei Folding Screen Series: Mate X2
  • Huawei P40 series: P40, P40 4G, P40 Pro, P40 Pro+
  • Huawei Mate30 series: 30, 30 5G, 30 Pro, 30 Pro 5G, 30E Pro 5G, 30 RS Porsche

The upgrade process is relatively easy, users will be able to upgrade with the system update feature if automatic OS updates is enabled. Or, it can be manually done via “Member Center” app → Home → Upgrade Early Access → Check Now.

Will my Android app work on HarmonyOS?

Based on a report published by Testin Cloud Testing platform, over 53% of the Chinese developers have already started adopting their apps on HarmonyOS. And based the 150 mainstream Android apps the platform has tested on HarmonyOS, 70.6% has passed the test without any redevelopment carried out, where 25.6% failed the test.

With the official roll out of the HarmonyOS, other Chinese domestic mobile manufactures such as Xiaomi has also shown their interests in the OS. It is possible that we will see the HarmonyOS on mobile devices from other Chinese brands in the near futures.
